Brake Service Warning Signs

Brake Lights: Emergency brake is on or you have a serious drop in hydraulic pressure. Your brakes may be near total failure.

Drag: Sticking brakes, hot wheels or engine that seems to have lost power. Brakes may be failing to release; the condition can reverse itself, leaving you with no brakes at all.

Grabs: "Touchy" brakes that grab with the least pressure. May indicate a problem as simple as grease or oil contaminated lining - or as serious as a loose or broken components ready to fail in an emergency.

Hard Pedal: Requires extreme pressure to make brake function. Can indicate power brake trouble, restricted hydraulic lines, frozen calipers or wheel cylinders, or damaged brake linings.

Low Pedal: Pedal nearly touches floorboard before brakes function. May activate your brake warning light. Problems may require a simple adjustment or indicate something much more serious.

Pull: Car pulls to one side when brakes are applied. May be an under inflated tire, misadjusted brakes or brakes are in need of repair.

Squeal: Brakes should operate with a minimal amount of noise. Some noise is normal but excessive squeal, screech, grinding, groaning, chatter, clatter or bang means your brakes need attention.

Vibration: Brake pedal, steering wheel or entire vehicle shakes, vibrates or pulsates when brake is applied. May indicate need to resurface disc brake rotors - or signal a serious problem of a loose component or faulty steering mechanism.

Headlights

Heating System

The heater in your car is basically a smaller version of your cooling systems radiator. Hot engine coolant is circulated through a small radiator, often times called a heater core. A fan is positioned in front of the heater core to blow cold outside air over the fins. As this air travels over the heater core, it heats up and becomes the hot air which blows out your heater vents.

Like your engines cooling system radiator, the heater core can suffer some of the same issues. If the heater core becomes clogged with rust or sludge, you will no longer have heat. Also leaks can cause a cabin full of white steam and really mess up your windows. If you smell the sweet aroma of coolant when your heater is on, chances are, you have a small leak in the heater core. Often times the heater core is buried under the dashboard, and replacing it, is a major job.

Missouri Safety Inspection

The inspection station will issue a Certificate of Inspection and Approval that must be presented to a contract office when the motor vehicle is registered.Vehicle safety inspections should not be made more than 60 days prior to the date the owner submits an application for title and license or registration renewal. If there is no change in vehicle ownership, even model year vehicles must be safety/emissions inspected (unless exempt) in even calendar years, and odd model year vehicles must be inspected (unless exempt) in odd calendar years.

Preventative Maintenance

Air Filters : A dirty air filter prevents the engine from breathing properly, which can decrease fuel mileage and performance and make the engine work harder than it needs to. Let your vehicle breathe! Change the air filter once a year or more often if you drive in dirty or dusty conditions.

If your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter, change that too. A dirty cabin air filter reduces the airflow through the vehicle’s ventilation system. Cabin air filters help keep pollens, fumes, smoke, and other materials from reaching the inside of a vehicle. See the owner’s manual to determine if your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter.

Brakes: Often, brakes have wear indicators that produce noise when it’s time to change the pads. Or your brakes may “feel” different when you press on them. If you think there may be a problem with your vehicle’s brakes, have Herrington Auto take a look. Our brakes are certified to federal safety standards.

Charging / Battery: Extreme heat and cold are hard on automotive batteries. If your vehicle is a few years old, have the battery and charging system tested to be sure that your battery has the power to start your vehicle and that your alternator is recharging the battery as it should.

Belts: Drive belts are essential for keeping your vehicle’s electrical (alternator), engine cooling (water pump), and air-conditioning systems running. Having them inspected periodically and replaced when necessary means you’re less likely to experience a broken belt and the resulting vehicle breakdown.

Cooling: A cooling system that is clogged or low on fluid can cause serious damage to the engine and other components. Get into the habit of checking the fluid level regularly, and have the fluid changed or flushed when recommended.

Wipers: Don’t wait for a rainy day to discover that your windshield wipers are worn and need replacement. Worn wipers can hinder visibility in rainy or snowy conditions. Wiper blades have a curved design that conforms to the shape of your windshield and provides constant pressure for a smooth, uniform wipe.

Ignition: Though many spark plugs are designed to last 100,000 miles, they can still get dirty or fail prematurely. Ignition wires lose insulating ability over time, and the connection to the plug or ignition coil can degrade as well. Having your service technician regularly inspect your ignition system can help you avoid conditions that may result in poor performance or reduced fuel economy.

Shocks and Struts: The suspension system affects your vehicle’s steering, braking power, and stability, so it’s important to have these functions inspected regularly and to replace parts when they become worn — and dangerous! It’s also important to have other chassis items, such as tie-rod ends, control arms, and ball joints, checked periodically.

Transmission: Automatic transmissions have become more sophisticated with additional gears and computerized electronic controls and are designed to work with the engine controls for best operation. Have the transmission inspected and serviced as recommended in the owner’s manual.

Wheel Alignment

Why Four Wheel Alignment? Reduced Tire Wear - Better Gas Mileage - Improved Handling

If you want to know if your vehicle needs a front end alignment there are a few indicators. Does your car pull to one side or the other when you are driving on a flat road with the steering wheel momentarily released? This will not be the slow drift to the side of the road that is caused by the crown of the road, but will be a definite pull. Pull indicates either misalignment or dragging brakes on one side. In any case, if your car is pulling it will need to be taken in to the shop.

The second indication of misalignment is tire wear. Tires should wear evenly across their surface. If the inside or outside of your tires on the front of the vehicle wears out before the rest of the tire you have an alignment problem. Toe in, toe out, caster, and camber all can affect tire wear patterns. In bad cases the tire will wear down to the belts and blow out. In any case, misalignment affects handling and tire longevity and should be corrected at a shop.

The best way to tell if you need an alignment is to take your car to a tire shop and have them check the alignment. The mechanic will be able to use measurement apparatus to determine if your alignment numbers are properly dialed in. They will also be able to check for mechanical problems like bent tie rod ends, broken links, bad ball joints and dragging brakes. Alignment is crucial for proper handling of your car and should be checked in a shop on a regular basis. There is no way you can do these measurements yourself without the proper test equipment".
